Family Fun Day

August 28 2019
Family Fun Day was an event hosted at the Maurice M. Pine Library, where we granted the opportunity to share our passion with different people! We organized a bean bag relay toss with a twist--children were given a bag with homemade paper bean bags labelled with different items ranging from paper cups to banana peels. The goal of the game was to then correctly match the bean bag with the correct box with bins that were categorized as recyclable, compost, and trash. Many participants got involved in our small game, which became a very fulfilling experience!

Maurice M. Pine Library: Session 1

August 29 2019
Our plan consists of multiple sessions over a couple weeks to build up interest amongst young students. We primarily discussed global warming, its causes, effects and what we should do to help. Throughout the lesson, we asked many questions and had multiple demonstrations to help the children learn and keep them engaged. At the end of the lesson we had a small craft to reinforce the positivity behind reduce, reuse, and recycle. To end the day, we made self watering planters out of plastic water bottles so that the kids leave with a physical reminder of their experience!

October 8 2019
Now that students have finally settled in, we're starting up after school programs! Our first program was at the Englewood Elementary School. This was done by me (Sakthi) and my friend Kasia. We used Lesson Plan 1 as this is a great kick starter for our later lessons. This was our first program with Ms. Rosa's class and hopefully we'll be going back next week! Instead of the water bottle planters, we did the 3'R's relay game because it helps us interact with them better, being this our first time meeting them. We had so much fun today! The kids were interacting so well and we had a great conversation filled with questions and fun.

October 15 2019
Our second program at Grieco was today! We also used Lesson Plan 1, as it was our first day with the class! It was lots of fun! It was especially great to see that the kids were already aware about topics regarding the environment and global warming. We left the classroom feeling fulfilled and inspired, knowing we had successfully imparted the purpose of our mission on the students.

October 16 2019
Our third day at Grieco! Today we decided to try out a newly devised lesson with some games, which turned out to be a success! Since the students were a bit younger this time, we noticed that some of them had a harder time keeping up, so managed to quickly improvise our plans to ensure that the lesson was easier to digest. The new games were lots of fun, but today especially taught us how to organize a disorderly classroom, and maintain professional throughout the process. The Tree Huggers team as well as the students left the classroom learning something new!

October 23 2019
We're back at Ms. Rosa's class! Today we reinforced the devastating effects of global warming, highlighting the three main types of pollution: light, air, and water. We also informed the young students of the Amazon Forest Fire, as a result of human intervention and carbon emissions. Our games further emphasized our role as defenders of the environment, as we illustrated the consequences of removing trees, the primary producer of oxygen. Whew, teaching children is a lot of work, but it's all worth it!

The Garfield YMCA, Session 1

October 28 2019
Today was the first time we taught a lesson at the YMCA in Garfield deviating from our usual routine at the John Grieco Elementary School. We were both extremely grateful that we were given the opportunity to observe how actively engaged the students were and listen to their insightful responses to difficult topics. Today's experience reinforced the role students play in nurturing our passion to teach and inspire!

November 13th 2019
Today we revisited Ms Cole's class with Lesson plan 3! Last time, I had gone with Kasia, and so this was the first time Anne had met the kids. I loved to see that a lot of the students remembered what we talked about in the previous lesson, and were able to make connections to the discussion we had about the environment today. It was really inspiring!

After School @ Dr. John Grieco Elementary School Day 6!

11/20/2019
We did something new and fun today! We brought our lessons to the gym! Kids were able to run around and play games while also learning. We played relay races, Sharks and Minnows, as well as Red Light Green Light (with a twist). We really enjoyed the time, and we believe the kids really did too. You can find the lesson plan on our website!

After School @ Dr. John Greico Elementary School Day 7

12/11/2019
Today we covered a variety of subjects with the kids such as pollution, recycling, and strategies of preservation. We incorporated different visual elements so that the kids could easily follow along and become entertained while learning. The students were extremely receptive to the information and asked a multitude of engaging questions, which really pushed us to keep working and spread this cause!

1/15/2020
Today we wanted to show how climate change is currently affecting our planet. A lot of the times, when we speak about conceptional topics such as global warming, it is a bit difficult for them to understand. However, especially with the devastating fires in Australia, we wanted to show the effects of our actions. It was a lot easier for them to understand because the program was based off of pictures, and they could physically see what was happening. We feel like today really opened up their minds to the extent of problems occurring today.

Today was all about inspiring the kids and giving them hope! We talked about what they could do to help the crisis based on their own talents. We wanted to show them that they can be a part of this movement no matter what they liked to do.
